La revista británica NME -New Music Express-, que desde hace muchos años es un referente dentro del mundo musical, publicó en su última edición una lista de las 500 mejores canciones de la historia según su juicio. "Smell Like Teen Spririt", de Nirvana, se quedó con el primer puesto, seguida de "Love Will Tear Us Apart", de Joy Division, y "I Feel Love", de Donna Summer en tercer lugar.


Esta elección se realizó mediante una encuesta entre sus redactores y críticos, en la que cada uno debía aportar 50 nombres. Además, se ha tenido en cuenta la interpretación más que la autoría.
